Eric Ducharme was always been fascinated by mermaids ever since his grandparents brought him to watch an underwater show in Florida. From then on, being a mermaid has become his life, passion and obsession. And his obsession has paid off as now, he runs a successful business that reflects perfectly his life long ambition.
Eric Ducharme, a gay man from Florida does not just love mermaids – it’s his life.
Mermaids have been a part of Eric’s life for as long as he can remember. He grew up in Weeki Wachee Springs, Florida’s legendary roadside mermaid attraction, and was amazed from the first time his grandparents took him to see the parks underwater theater, where a beautiful gold-tailed creature swam across the window, waving and blowing kisses to the audience.
“I eat, breathe and sleep mermaids. It’s a lifestyle – it’s my lifestyle. It’s the path in life that I have chosen.”
Eric started young when he made his first tails. He made use of any materials he could find such as garbage bags, glue, masking tape, and the sheets off his own bed. He later learned how to use the sewing machine from his grandmother and started sewing his first fabric tails.
Eric explores and experiments with other different materials such as silicone, urethanes, and latex rubbers. He is not stopping anytime as long his tails are not as real as fish scales and ocean reefs.
Ducharme is now making a living as a ‘Mertailor’. You can visit his website in www.themertailor.com. His creations have been worn by celebrities like Lady Gaga, and featured in shows like Germany’s Next Top Model.
